Cubism Portrait Sculptures
Inspired by Pablo Picasso and the Cubism movement, each student created a 3-dimensional bust featuring warm and cool colors. Student created sketches of their sculptures which focused on conveying emotions through facial features. One side of the sculpture illustrated happiness while the other side portrayed sadness. Students bent wire coat hangers to create the shapes of the cubist heads. Pantyhose was than pulled over the wire structure and coated with multiple layers of glue. Once the glue dried, the pantyhose were still enough to paint on. After a few coats of white paint, students drew their faces onto the structure. The structures were then painted, warm colors were used on the happy side while cool colors were used on the sad side. Since these projects were based on the work of Picasso during the Cubist period, the faces were distorted and facial features were placed in unusual spots.
